Tesco has taken delivery of 28 Volvo FM tractor-units for operation in Northern Ireland.

The new trucks will operate out of the supermarket’s Belfast and Antrim DCs, and take its fleet in the province to 35 trucks and 155 trailers.

Nine more Volvo FMs are due for delivery before December too, all via Dennison Commercials.

John Larosa, regional engineer for Tesco Distribution, said: “We have a very strong partnership with Dennisons for fifteen years now, since Tesco was first introduced into Northern Ireland.

“From the very beginning Dennisons demonstrated a clear understanding of the needs of our operation.” This has included a repair and maintenance service for both Tesco’s trucks and trailers.

Tesco also cited the fuel economy - with 11mpg achieved during road trials - and the whole life cost of the FM, as factors in its decision to order the Volvos.

Tesco recently received permission to develop an Oxfordshire home delivery DC.
