DHL has launched a smartphone app for drivers and subcontractors which sends real time data and PoD information back to base.

DHL claims the SmartPOD app is compatible with most transport management systems and allows drivers to send information about their deliveries back to base, including vehicle location and departure and arrival times.

Grain supplier Openfield, which subcontracts around 100,000 loads per year, is one of the first operators to start using the app. The firm claims it has cut paperwork and helped it's drivers avoid traffic delays.

Openfield director of operations Jim Hotchin said: “With our drivers on the road Monday to Friday, it was taking up to two weeks to process information, resulting in delayed cash-flows and supply shortages.

"Using the SmartPOD app, we get delivery information in real time making a significant impact to efficiencies, which in turn are driving cost savings.”

The app was developed in conjunction with transport management system firm Microlise and is available for Android smartphones on the Google Play store.
