National Grid has extended and renewed its contract with DHL for four years.

The new element of the contract will see DHL manage warehouses in Birmingham and Didcot, Oxfordshire, which store equipment needed to maintain and construct National Grid’s gas and electricity network.

DHL will also make supplier collections and deliveries on behalf of the energy infrastructure firm, as well as manage regional warehouses including 18 secondary and 51 unmanned stores.

The company has operated smaller RDCs that support National Grid’s gas and electricity business, as well as transport for the firm, for nine years.

Alan Paterson, business director, utilities & infrastructure, at DHL Supply Chain said: “Our in-depth knowledge of the business and experience of the wider utilities and infrastructure market mean we’re ideally placed to help National Grid improve efficiency, improve service levels and deliver continuous improvement, as required under the RIIO [Revenue=Incentives+Innovation+Outputs] framework.”

All staff currently working for National Grid at Birmingham and Didcot will be transferred to the DHL team.
