Royal Mail is opening eight temporary sorting centres to handle the expected rise in parcel volumes this Christmas.
The centres will be dedicated to sorting a ‘significant proportion’ of the parcels handled by the firm before they are distributed to regional depots across the country.
Temporary operations will be phased in across the peak period and will open in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Swansea, Bolton, Tamworth, Peterborough, Swindon and Greenford, west London.
Managing director of operations and modernisation Mark Higson said: “Christmas is the busiest time of year for Royal Mail and our customers. Royal Mail has invested in eight dedicated parcel sort centres to increase our scale and improve our flexibility during this important time of year for our customers.”
Last week Royal Mail revealed plans to invest £75m in its Parcelforce operation over the next four years, opening a new parcel processing centre in Chorley, Lancashire as well as two new depots in Cornwall and Hampshire.
