Roadways Container Logistics is to introduce Fargo Systems’ smartphone telematics software into its business, allowing employees to respond to changing delivery and planning requirements on the go.

The five-year deal will see the Tops On the Go Android smartphone software put in the hands of employees working out of Roadways’ seven depots.

Initially 50 units will be deployed, with full implementation during the first quarter of 2013 providing coverage across the business and the operator’s 300-strong vehicle fleet.

Using the new Tops enabled mobile units, drivers will be able to carry out their daily vehicle checks, report defects and receive job information via their smartphone, eliminating paperwork.

The software will also replace timesheets, and allow the recording of drivers’ hours, expenses and fuel drawn on the device. Automatic alerts will also be sent to transport planners within Roadways if delays are encountered, allowing them to respond quickly and brief customers accordingly.

Phil Wilkes, IT general manager at Roadways Container Logistics, said: “Deploying Tops On the Go across our network is a major investment for us, and is in line with our plans to fulfil our customers’ needs today and into the future.”

The container specialist has used Fargo’s Tops transport and container management software since 2010.

Roadways revealed it had returned to the black for 2011 in March of this year.
